Located at the highest edge of Luján de Cuyo, about 1,050 meters (3,445 feet) above sea level, Las Compuertas is one of Mendoza’s most traditional wine regions. This is a place that witnessed the rise of Argentine Malbec and, in recent years, has become a hub for boutique projects and high-end wines. The secret lies in its unique mix of alluvial soils, cooler climate, and historic vineyards.
Over the past decade, wineries such as Durigutti, Riccitelli, Lamadrid, MAAL Wines, Sur de los Andes, Cheval des Andes, Finca Bandini, and even a new project backed by footballer Lautaro Martínez have invested heavily in this terroir. What makes Las Compuertas especially interesting is its soil diversity. Some parcels are rocky, rich in calcium carbonate, while others combine clay, silt, and sand. This variation allows winemakers to craft wines with depth and concentration, soft tannins, and naturally balanced acidity.
One of the region’s most compelling features is its old vines. Some vineyards here are more than 100 years old, standing alongside newer plantings of less traditional varieties like Criolla Chica, Cordisco, Nero d’Avola, and Petit Verdot. Durigutti Family Winemakers, for example, has developed a strong sustainability focus at Finca Victoria, where visitors can enjoy tastings and farm-driven cuisine in the middle of the vineyards.
Then there is Cheval des Andes, the prestigious partnership between Château Cheval Blanc of Bordeaux and Terrazas de los Andes. In Las Compuertas, they produce their renowned Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon blend, often described as one of the “Grand Crus” of the Andes.
Beyond the wine, Las Compuertas offers a complete travel experience. High-level gastronomy, vineyard visits, and guided tastings are all part of the appeal. And thanks to its location just 20 minutes from Mendoza city, it’s an easy and essential stop for anyone wanting to explore the true character of Mendoza Malbec.
With around 500 hectares under vine and a growing reputation for quality-focused production, Las Compuertas has established itself as one of Argentina’s benchmark terroirs, where tradition and innovation come together in every bottle.
